Public Tour of the Goethe House
Johann Wolfgang Goethe was born and raised in the house on Großer Hirschgraben. He spent his childhood and most of his youth here until 1775, when he accepted an invitation from Hereditary Prince Carl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach to move to Weimar. In his parents’ home, Goethe created his impressive early works, including *Götz von Berlichingen*, the original version of *Faust*, and *The Sorrows of Young Werther*, which made him world-famous overnight. In the unique atmosphere of the rooms, furnished in their original style, the Goethe family’s life and 18th-century Frankfurt come to life.
Two exhibition venues, two special exhibitions, various guided tours, plenty of fairy tales, and theatrical tours with Bettine Brentano—there’s plenty to experience at Großer Hirschgraben. An art studio and workshops also offer the opportunity to get creative yourself. At the Goethe House, you can experience the unique atmosphere of the home where the poet spent his childhood and youth. The German Romanticism Museum offers insight into a very special era. The stories told there show what Romanticism can be: an era of cultural history, an aesthetic movement, or simply a feeling.
