MGGU - Giersch Museum of the Goethe University
The elegant Holzmann Villa is not only a fascinating venue for art, but also a gateway to research and teaching.
It is one of the small, exquisite gems of the Museum Embankment: the Museum Giersch, located in the neoclassical Holzmann Villa right on the Main River. Since 2015, it has been part of Frankfurt’s Goethe University and likes to call itself the “window to the university.” If museum director Ina Neddermeyer—who joined the institution in 2024—has her way, this “window” will become a “door to the university”: art, science, research, and teaching converge here and are set to collaborate even more closely.
For visitors, the museum offers a double dose of charm: On the one hand, the exhibitions feature lesser-known artists from the Rhine-Main region, whose work is well explained thanks to the collaboration with the university. On the other hand, the three-story villa offers an extraordinary ambiance: Builder Wilhelm Holzmann constructed the house in 1910 for his family, and elements from that era have been preserved to this day, particularly on the lower floors, creating an almost private atmosphere. Incidentally, the museum owes its name to the foundation established by art patron Carlo Giersch, who founded the museum in 2000.
