Museum Judengasse
Starting in 1460, Frankfurt’s Jewish population was settled in this narrow alley along the old city wall. With a population of 3,000, Judengasse had grown into one of the most significant Jewish centres in Europe by the 17th century—nowhere else in Germany was there such a large Jewish community. How did people live back then, and what was the interaction like with Frankfurt’s Christian residents? This exhibition, set within the excavations of five former houses, explores these questions. The Judengasse Museum is part of the Jewish Museum Frankfurt and provides vivid insights into objects that were crafted or used here in modern times; a separate room is dedicated to music and literature that originated in the Judengasse. The exhibition is complemented by the Jewish Cemetery adjacent to the museum and the Börneplatz Memorial. From here, the Nazis deported more than 11,000 Frankfurt Jews to concentration camps.
